How Much are Glass Door Knobs Worth?

Glass doorknobs are definitely more expensive than traditional, metal knobs. On average, they go for around $30 to $50, with some exceptions.

Like all home accessories, the cost of a set of doorknobs depends on the quality, brand, and style. Some other factors, like whether or not they’re antiques, also affects their value.

Surprisingly, the shape of a glass doorknob is a driving factor in its price. 12-sided knobs, for example, are the ones that cost around $50. But, six and eight-sided knobs go for double.

You’ll find that perfectly round, crystal ball door knobs are very expensive. Typically, they cost around $500 because it takes so much work to make them round.

Why Do Glass Door Knobs Turn Purple?

While glass doorknobs are a great accessory for your doors, they also come with their own problems.

One of the biggest issues is that they turn purple over time.

Why do they turn purple?

Well, it’s actually a very scientific (and slightly nerdy) answer. But, it’s quite interesting.

Colorless glass contains a chemical called manganese dioxide. Manufacturers add this chemical to their doorknobs to remove any color (dust, debris, etc) that might be present during production. This helps them to ensure that every knob comes out crystal-clear so that they don’t have to throw out every knob that has a color piece of dust in it.

Ironically, manganese dioxide is also the material that causes knobs to turn purple over time. When this chemical is exposed to prolonged sunlight, it starts to get a purple color.

Thus, you’ll usually find that your exterior knobs turn purple very quickly. The interior knobs, on the other hand, take much longer.

Weird, right?

Do Door Knobs Come in Different Sizes?

Most doors come in standard sizes. Unless a door is custom-made, they’re usually 80 inches tall and 30-36 inches wide.

Because most doors are the same size, most doorknobs are the same size, too. While the actual knobs (like the part you hold with your hand) vary in size, the mounting mechanisms are all pretty similar. This means that most doorknobs will fit in your door, no matter how big the door is.

The one thing to keep in mind is that doors have different thicknesses. Typically, interior doors are thinner than exterior doors. So, if you need a new knob for your outside door, make sure to get one that can accommodate its thickness.
